Colorful kites of all sizes and shapes flying high over the grounds of the Mid-America Windmill Museum are a sure sign of spring. This annual event, held on Mother’s Day, the second Sunday in May, has become a favorite spring tradition since the first Kite Day in 2001. Working together with members of the Hoosier Kiteflyers Society and museum volunteers, children of all ages can build a simple sled kite in Baker Hall. The kite is easy to construct using materials provided by the Hoosier Kiteflyers and flies effortlessly with even a gentle breeze..
Parents, children and groups of all ages are welcome to bring their own kites, build one in Baker Hall or just enjoy the fun. Dr. Tom Jansen from Kendallville, a member of the Hoosier Kiteflyers Society, has been a long time kite enthusiast and always brings a variety of kites to fly. John Pierce, a museum volunteer, can generally be found flying some of his own kites as well. Whether you build a kite from scratch or bring your own, everybody from toddler to grandparent, can share the joy of flying a kite. Come to the Windmill Museum and go fly a kite!
Kendallville’s Pizza Hut is a proud supporter and sponsor of this family event. Each child making or flying a kite is given a coupon for a free personal pan pizza. Prizes are awarded for several different categories of kites.
Hours for the Kite Day are from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Admission is $2.00 for people 13 and older includes. Children 12 and under are admitted for free. Museum entry is included in the admission price. Food and beverages are available. There is ample free parking available. Kite Day is a great fun filled outing for scout troops, youth groups and senior groups. Contact the museum for more details.
