Fall Fling Antique Gas Engine Show

A hobby of collecting and restoring antique gas engines led museum volunteer Richard Hobson to organize a Fall Fling Windmill Antique Gas Engine Show & Swap Meet in October 2003 to be held on the museum grounds. The event was designed to bring together windmill dealers and gas engine collectors for a swap meet and show. Both windmills and antique gas engines were typical mechanical applications used to perform a variety of farm related activities before electricity came to rural areas. Working together they were instrumental in the progress agriculture made by providing labor saving farm machinery across the country.

The Fall Fling Antique Gas Engine Show is held on the first weekend in October. Over the years, the number of windmill dealers participating has declined and it is now a show for gas engine collectors and enthusiasts. Visitors touring the museum during that weekend have the opportunity to listen to the squeak, whir, click-clack, sputter, pop, and chugging sounds of windmills and gas engines, while watching windmills spinning in the breeze.

Several factors, including the road construction on C. R. 1000 E, combined with a smaller than expected number of exhibitors at the 2007 Fall Fling Antique Gas Engine Show, prompted the show’s organizers and the museum’s board of directors to reexamine the Fall Fling. The decision was made not to have a Fall Fling 2008. The Mid-America Windmill Museum recognizes the importance of the connection between windmills and gas engines. In an effort to preserve that relationship, the museum is considering revising the structure of the Fall Fling to again include windmill dealers and a possible date change. As more information becomes available, it will be posted on the web site.
